Pros and Cons - This is a free html editor that has been on the web for many years and many people have used it to create web pages. It is an html editor not a WYSIWYG editor (What you see is what you get). The Netscape composer that comes with the Netscape browser is a WYSIWYG editor, so is Front Page and there are others. You may not realize it but if you use Microsoft Windows, you can actually write html into a text file editor on your computer and save it as a webpage. An html editor is hard to use. You must know how to read and write html. Most people who came to the web before the year 2000 can do this trick because they had to learn. There was no other way to build WebPages. When WYSIWYG editors came out it eliminated the need to learn html. This is both good and bad, as WYSIWYG editors put extra code into the html. When you use WYSIWYG editors they sometimes cause distortions and java scripts to go haywire. For example, the Pay Pal buy it now button will not work correctly if you use Netscape to create your web pages. This problem can be solved by keeping an editor like 1st Page on your computer for situations such as this. So, if you are interested in writing html or need an html editor for inserting java, you can download your copy of Evr Soft 1st Page from their site: http://www.evrsoft.com/download.shtml I tried to download a copy of 1st Page 2000 and could only access their latest version. There was no information available on the page as to whether it was free or paid. I found this very dis-concerning. Apparently this company has created a new version of this html editor called: 1st Page 2006. And from roaming around in the forum area on the web I have learned that it is not completely free and there is a nag screen. (Nag screens are little screens that pop up when you open a program that comes with a free trial. These screens will nag you periodically to pay). It seems people were paying for the program and not getting an unlock key. This was a real problem. The consensus seemed to be that everyone should just endure the nag screen and keep working with the free software. Apparently there are enough features available to do that. The conversations about this topic seemed to stop in September 2006. I have no idea why.
Recommended? NO. Until the site clears up the issue regarding whether or not this is a paid item we personally dont think anyone should download it. It is an editor that a programmer might need and not completely necessary for we marketers. The average web designer can do their html in a text file and save in webpage format.
